The Florida Department of Education has announced an additional graduation requirement for Florida students entering the first year of high school in the 2006-07 school year.
Section 1008.22 (5) F.S., requires that students earn passing scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in reading, writing, and mathematics to qualify for a regular high school diploma, except as provided in Section 1003.43 (11)(b). A student enrolled in grade 9 for the first time in 2006-07 school year must achieve a passing score on FCAT Writing+ in addition to the current requirements of achieving passing FCAT scores in reading and mathematics.
The Florida Department of Education has informed school districts that achievement levels, as well as the graduation score, will be presented at the State Board of Education January 2007 meeting. The graduation passing score will be applied to eligible students beginning with the Spring 2008 administration of the FCAT.
Your student has been informed at school of this new requirement: Students enrolled for the first time in Grade 9 in 2006-07, and thereafter, must meet the FCAT Writing+ graduation requirement in addition to all other established graduation requirements and the Department of Education will release what that passing score will be by January of 2007.
If you have any questions regarding the FCAT Writing+ requirement, please contact the school for more information.
